Sturgis is known around the world for the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally which takes place the first full week in August each year. Beginning in mid-July, you will begin to see vendors and bikers showing up in anticipation of the rally. Hundreds of thousands of bikers come to the Black Hills each year to enjoy riding through the hills, visiting attractions, listening to some big name concerts at various campgrounds, and of course partying! During this time, prices for lodging are higher throughout the Black Hills and you may have a difficult time even finding a room. Getting around during this week takes a little longer due to increased traffic, so patience is key!
Although Sturgis is most famous for the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, there is much more to Sturgis than just motorcycles. Fort Meade, located east of Sturgis on Hwy 34, was a cavalry post built in the late 1800’s. Fort Meade was officially deactivated in 1944 and turned over to the Veterans Administration for use as a hospital, which is still in use today. The Old Fort Meade Museum offers an interesting look at this historic area.
Further east on Hwy 34 then north on Hwy 79, you will find Bear Butte. Bear Butte State Park features a variety of activities including: fishing, boating, camping and hiking. The mountain is sacred to many American Indian tribes so please be respectful of worshippers and their religious practices.
