Deadwood is a unique town with a history as exciting as any TV series. The entire town is designated as a National Historic Landmark. Founded in 1876, thanks to the discovery of gold, Deadwood attracted some notable characters including: Wild Bill Hickock, Calamity Jane, Seth Bullock and more. As you might expect from a town with such an interesting past, you can find ample opportunity to explore the past throughout Deadwood. There are museums and historic tours as well as reenactments that are sure to entertain young and old alike. A must-see attraction just outside of Deadwood is Tatanka: Story of the Bison which features larger than life bronze statues. The centerpiece of Tatanka is the 3rd largest bronze sculpture in the world. It is composed of a total of 17 pieces: 14 bison being pursued by three Lakota riders on bareback.
