Lead is a historic mining town nestled in the northern Black Hills just three miles west of Deadwood. Founded during the Black Hills Gold Rush in 1876, Lead was once home to the famous Homestake Gold Mine, which operated for more than 125 years and was the largest and deepest gold mine in North America. Today, visitors can learn about the town’s rich mining history at the Sanford Lab Homestake Visitor Center, where exhibits showcase the incredible story of gold mining and the science taking place deep underground.
One of Lead’s most popular attractions is the Open Cut, a massive former surface mining operation that stretches nearly a mile long and offers an impressive glimpse into the area’s mining past. Several overlooks provide excellent photo opportunities while explaining how the mine helped shape the community. Just a short drive away, downtown Deadwood offers additional museums, casinos, restaurants, and historic sites for visitors to explore.
Lead is also a year-round destination for outdoor recreation. During the winter months, nearby Terry Peak Ski Area attracts skiers and snowboarders from across the region. In the warmer months, visitors enjoy hiking, mountain biking, ATV riding, and exploring the hundreds of miles of trails throughout the Black Hills National Forest.
